Research Summary of Daniel W. Jones, M.D.

Dr. Jones’ research is done through the Division of Hypertension in the Department of Medicine. The research focuses on cardiovascular disease in general and hypertension in particular. All of the studies are human non-invasive studies. Most of the studies are clinical trials, but some epidemiologic studies are done as well.

Most of the clinical trials have been multi-center randomized clinical trials. Recent or on-going studies include the Hypertension Optimal Treatment (HOT) Study, ALLHAT, and Trials of Hypertension Prevention (TOHP). Recently-completed epidemiologic studies include the INTERMAP Study, an NIH-sponsored multi-center observational study investigating the relationship between nutrition and blood pressure.

The largest study being done is the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) Study. Jackson is one of four sites nationally for this longitudinal observational study of cardiovascular disease risk factors. Presently, the study is in the planning stages for expansion to a single site African American cohort study with a sample size of 8,000 called the Jackson Heart Study. The primary question is "What Is The Reason For The Excess Cardiovascular Disease Burden In African Americans?"
